Dreaming of a metropolis

When the Germans bombed the city centre in May 1940, Rotterdam lost its Renaissance-style theatre, the Groote Schouwburg. The temporary replacement built from the rubble in 1947 remained standing until 1988, when it made way for the current theatre, designed by architect Wim Quist. During the building, the whole Schouwburgplein underwent a radical change of appearance. The new square, designed by architect Adriaan Geuze, was intended to be a city stage in itself.

Located in the plinth of the theatre building, theatre café Floor acts as a link between the spectacle taking place inside and the other stage outdoors. With our monthly Floorshow, we also rolled out the red carpet ourselves. For more than twenty years, we invited actors, directors, writers and musicians to come and talk about their performances and projects. The development of Rotterdam was also a recurring theme in the talk show.
